PST files are used to archive emails.

A Personal Storage Table (.pst) is an open proprietary file format used to store copies of messages, calendar events, and other items within Microsoft software such as Microsoft Exchange Client, Windows Messaging, and Microsoft Outlook.

Most networks have limits on mailbox size, so users go off and create PST files with thousands and millions of old emails. This can cause space issues. Also from a security point of view these files can contain sensitive emails and tacking who has access is important.

One of the key windows file shares report is called 'Search by Filename'.

Use the filename filter search string .pst$

This will return any pst files accessed across the network.

Performing a search for PST file activity
To perform the search:

  1. Click on Reports in the LANGuardian menu bar.

  2. In the Windows File Shares section, click on Search by Filename. The Windows File Shares :: Search by Filename report is displayed.

  3. Enter the file type .pst in the File Name filter.

  4. Click View.

  5. The report displays any .pst files accessed across the network and allows you to track who is responsible for accessing these files.
