A how-to on speeding up LANGuardian and Maximising Report Performance

The suggestions below can help you maximize the performance of your reports, allowing you to spend more time on your analysis and less time running reports.

  1. Improving Hardware:
    - Use a faster hard disk interface
    - Increase the amount of available RAM
    - Move to a decoupled Central Manager system

  2. When a LANGuardian is acting in standalone mode it will have the workload of analysing the traffic being monitored, storing it and then retrieving it when reports are been generated. When operating with a dedicated Central Manager and the sensors are on external platforms the load generated by the analysis of the traffic is offloaded to the external platforms. Execution of the reports will then have more computing resources available.

  3. Scoping and Optimizing Filters:
When using report filters to customize a report, try limiting the time range to just what you need. It takes much longer to look at a 24 hour window, than a 1 hour window. Always use the starting and ending data values to limit the report scope.

  4. Hide graphs:
The graphs generated by the LANGuardian add to the visual presentation of the data, however they cause the report execute time to be much longer as data points need to be calculated for each point on the graph.

  5. Review the reports on the dashboard:
Are the reports using the correct time interval (1 hour, 4 hours etc).

  6. Trend drilldown:
The time range of the report generated when you drilldown, is a fraction of the total range displayed. If you have 14 days displayed, then drilldown report will cover a longer range and will take longer to execute. So, only display what you need (1 day if that's all you need). (This is scheduled for change in a future release).

  7. Managing parallel queries:
The more queries happening in parallel, the slower any single query will be. Be aware of who has access to LANGuadian and that they should not be running several reports in parallel. Each time you click View Report, the report runs to completion, even if you click Stop.

  8. Enhancing Report speed:
Use a faster browser such as FireFox or Chrome that can speed up the time pages load, Internet Explorer may be slower but this is not critical.

  9. Organizing your reports:
Identity those report and trends that are not required and are to be deleted from your LANGuardian dashboard.

  10. Decreasing logging:
Review data being logged and disable data collection of parameters that are not required.
